While I hate long seperations between couples, Rocky, Layne, and the kids really made up for it. I adored this family. Even though things weren't exactly as they seem in the beginning, to see a couple working together is what I love to read. Add in two teenage mini alpha's, Layne's sons, and you've got a winner.Drama outside of the relationship is much preferable to me as a reader. Not that they didn't have drama in the relationship because they still had to work through what happened 18 years prior. However, I still felt like they were in it together and that's what made the difference.This one had a lot of great side characters that also added to my overall enjoyment of the book. There were a few minor things that I didn't like, but all the good outweighed the little irritations.I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend it. This author has a knack for picking out great narrators. Golden Trail by Kristen Ashley is the third book in The ‘Burg Series that’s centered around the everyday people of an Indiana suburb. This is a stand-alone series and can absolutely be read alone. I read the first book in the series, For You and skipped the second because the dying spouse trope isn’t my thing.In book 3, Golden Trail we get another second chance romance story! I adore second chance romance novels. This may be my favorite trope of all time. Long lost lovers that never got over each other even after 21 years. What could be better? I anticipated so much angst and it was delivered early on.Tanner Layne and Raquel Merrick fell in love young; everything was perfect or so Tanner thought. Up until one day, Raquel, better known as Rocky, left him. Just flat out left him with no explanation. He did try to contact her but after no avail and countless tries he moved on with his life.After so many years apart, something occurs that brings Rocky back into Tanner’s life. Tanner, who has two sons and an ex-wife actually left the Burg to travel for a bit after his divorce. Even when getting back into town he has always tried to avoid Rocky who by the way, is married herself. I know right? So much drama! Typical KA style and I love it.Although I did love it and all the tropes involved it got stale to me and then felt so long I almost DNF’d this. Just due to boredom because I felt at a certain point, we deserved the answers of why she left already.I disagree with some of the critiques I’ve read about her not having a good reason. I actually felt the reason was so sad and heartbreaking to watch but also such a powerful scene. Kristen Ashley is just such a unique author as you’ll note, her writing is very down home, and I imagine true to Indiana slang.There is a suspenseful drama occurring throughout the story involving a crime taking place.I loved the way Tanner treated Rocky. He looked out for her in so many ways. They were such a cute couple and I’m glad they got their HEA.
